" A week back from Thailand and I'm already missing the food and weather (and week of freedom!). While I didn't hit as many places as I imagined, the less planning made for a more relaxing and cheaper trip, plus I didn't realize how difficult the Thai language was and don't know where I would have ended up had I tried tackling the railways and bus lines there! Fortunately, during the 9 days I spent in Thailand, I always had my Thai friends to navigate, translate, order food, serve as tour guides, etc. It had to seem strange to onlookers who overheard us using Chinese to communicate, since our Chinese was mutually better than their English or my Thai! I flew in on a Friday night, getting in around 10:30 pm. Fortunately my classmate from Guilin, Yi Long, met me at the airport and his friend drove us to his place where I ended up staying the next several nights. It wasn't exactly luxurious, just a one-room flat apartment above a 7-11 with a desk, closet, mattress, and several fans because there wasn't air conditioning. Surprisingly, the fans made a world of a difference and actually made the 90-95 degree days feel pretty comfortable. Nothing could be done about immediately sweating once you went outside, though. He lived a good hour north of the downtown area of Bangkok, which made for an authentic Thai ...
